Bardock smirked at the young saiyans urn for a challenge “Your right strength won’t always be enough, you need a strong strategic mind as well…”

”That’s where you come in” he said with a grin. “I’ve always wanted to learn how to fight with several opponents at once” Trunks looked away from Bardock, already imagining how exciting that would be.

”I’ve always wondered…” he started, taking a second to inhale and gather the courage to continue speaking “why don’t you go back? Not forever, because I can’t imagine you being so far away from us, but…” Trunks found himself unable to explain what he meant, hoping his mother would understand nonetheless.

“I..” she thought of it for a moment. As much as she wanted to go back to see her parents at least, she was worried something would happen if she were to leave. What if Vegeta actually started feeling something for Videl? What then? She would be left with nothing if that happened. What if some terrible event occurred in her absence and she couldn’t do anything about it? “I’m not sure. I’m just too paranoid to do that, I suppose.”

”Oh…” Trunks said, moving away from his mother to sit with his legs crossed in front of her. He looked up at her “You shouldn’t get paranoid, I’m sure the people of Earth would accept you back with open arms” he said. Trunks of course thought his mother feared she wasn’t going to be welcomed by the Earthlings.

She almost said that’s not what she was worried about, but she chose not to because it would probably complicate their conversation. “Maybe, Trunks. I would just have to think about it before taking such a big step. Besides, I’m sure my friends have moved on after I’ve left. I mean, I would.” She would want to take Vegeta with her, but she knew she couldn’t do that especially not now.

Trunks sighed, his head tilted to his left as he thought about what his mother had just said. “They would be glad to see you” he mumbled, unsure if that was true, but he had always pictured Earthlings as very sentimental creatures, very delicate and fragile in all aspects. “Maybe you could convince Father to let you bring someone here. Someone who would like to spend time with you, from Earth” he said.

@Trunks

”You might not be strong” he said softly, looking up at her “but you are above them all in all remaining areas” he said with determination. “They might be jealous of everything you achieved, of what you are. Of what we are” he corrected himself, with a grin. Beautiful, above average, special. He tried to keep those things in mind. The thing that set them apart had to be something good, too.

“I just hope to have genuine friends here someday. The kind that don’t feel obliged to be our friends because we’re of higher authority. I don’t want someone that’s truly my friend to feel belittled around me.”

When he smiled, she smiled. It was true. They had better qualities than a lot of the people around here. The only thing that made her inwardly sad was how she and Vegeta used to be friends. He was the person that she could talk to about anything but it all suddenly changed and she was alone again.

"I understand….I’m sure with time you’ll learn how these things work…I’d get us a mission myself but I don’t have the kind of pull I used to…" he said giving the prince a small smile thankful for his willingness to help him

”I’m sure I can get us one, a good one. A real challenge” he said, proudly. “I really want to test my abilities in a real situation, Bardock. I know I’m powerful” he said, not a hint of humility in his voice because he never felt he had to pretend he didn’t know “but I feel like strength is not enough sometimes”.

"Understood" he said with a nod "So when do you think we will be shipped out for our 1st assignment if you don’t mind my asking”

Trunks liked when Bardock addressed him in this way, like he was one of the gang. He felt part of this squad, even when it had just been assembled a minute before. “I have to be honest, I don’t know much about these things. I don’t know how long the preparations would take, but I don’t want more than two weeks to go by, or I’ll go crazy in here” he said. Bardock had much, much more experience, so he trusted him and expected him to guide him. Maybe someday Trunks could lead his own squad, and if things happened as he hoped, the Saiyan race eventually.

Bulma looked down at him and sighed. She had such a flourishing social life back on Earth but it was no more. The Saiyans were a rougher crowd and she was a mere human.

“You don’t deserve it either, Trunks. Some things just can’t be helped.”

“Of course! I would be honored if you would accompany us! With someone of your power level accompanying us we could take on any enemy!” he said…

"No worries Prince….though I assume you won’t want me informing your mother of your accompanying me?"

”Actually, I…” Trunks ran a hand through his hair, pulling it back momentarily. He didn’t know if it was better for the Queen to hear it from himself, or Bardock. Or maybe not hear about it at all until he was out of the planet? “No, don’t tell her… yet” he said, looking up at Bardock with a nod.

Trunks smiled, closing his eyes as he felt his mother’s hands on his head. He enjoyed it greatly, and it made the words come out of his mouth in a softer tone than he had anticipated. “Who would want to truly be friends with us?” he asked.

Bulma had to lean in to hear what he was saying. She gently  brushed her fingers through his soft hair as she thought for a moment. “Very few. But we have to at least try to look.”

Trunks opened his eyes and looked ahead, but not really looking at anything in particular. He smiled, because the first thing that popped into his head was telling her that he could be her friend. How childish of him that would be. How untrue, too.
“I don’t want you to feel lonely, Mother. You don’t deserve it” he said.

Bulma looked down at him and sighed. She had such a flourishing social life back on Earth but it was no more. The Saiyans were a rougher crowd and she was a mere human.

“Of course! I would be honored if you would accompany us! With someone of your power level accompanying us we could take on any enemy!” he said hastily, he wasn’t lying the prince was much more powerful then Fasha, his son, or himself.

Trunks fought back a smile, trying to look…

Bardock himself had forgotten all about the Queen “I’ll still full fill my duties to the Queen…I’ll have someone watch over her in my absence…”

Trunks blushed, he felt embarrassed by his sudden preoccupation towards his mother, when she was more than safe in the palace, with all the Saiyans around that were loyal and respectful of her. “Of course, I… I hadn’t thought of that” he admitted. “I’ll be brighter on the missions, I promise” he said with a grin.
